Plaza de España set to turn into an opera stage for one special night
The Teatro Real’s travelling Carroza returns to Cádiz on May 29 with a free recital and a bigger, upgraded stage
There is something rather special about hearing opera in the open air, and Cádiz is about to enjoy exactly that again. On May 29, Plaza de España will host the Teatro Real’s travelling Carroza for the third year running, with a free recital beginning at 8.30pm.The event is part of the Teatro Real’s 2026 season, which will take opera and zarzuela to more than 40 locations across Spain. In Cádiz, the performance will feature voices and musicians from the Crescendo project of the Friends of the Teatro Real Foundation, giving young performers the chance to appear in front of a wider audience.
This year’s visit comes with a noticeable upgrade. The mobile stage has been renovated and now has double the capacity, reaching almost 14 metres in length. The Teatro Real says the redesign includes two internal dressing rooms and one external dressing room for the artists, as well as a new enclosure and insulation system to improve the performance and adapt it to different public spaces.
The musical programme will include well-known arias and duets from some of the most famous operas, along with popular zarzuela romances. It is very much aimed at making the genre feel accessible, with a setting that brings the music out into the city rather than keeping it behind theatre doors.
Beatriz Gandullo, Cádiz’s Deputy Mayor for Festivals, welcomed the return of the initiative. “It’s a new opportunity to enjoy a show of this calibre live, so that people who don’t have the chance to attend performances at the Teatro Real can have access to this recital in their own city,” she said.
The Carroza first arrived in Cádiz in 2024 and has already proved popular with local audiences. Last year, the City Council placed 650 chairs in front of the stage for the concerts, which were both sold out. This time, Plaza de España will once again become the centre of attention for an evening that combines culture, atmosphere and a very public celebration of opera.
