Nearly 800 people have been evacuated across Huelva and Seville provinces as the blaze enters its fifth day with no end in sight

The wildfire burning near Niebla in Huelva has escalated dramatically. What started five days ago has now spread across nearly 20,000 hectares, an area roughly the size of Paris, and authorities have made a stark admission: the fire is currently beyond their capacity to put out.

"This is beyond the capacity to extinguish, not due to a lack of resources, but because of the extraordinary complexity and dangerous nature of the fire's behaviour," said Antonio Sanz, Andalucía's Minister of the Presidency, Health and Emergencies, speaking at the Advanced Command Post on Monday. He warned that the fight ahead will be "a long-distance race with obstacles" lasting several more days.

Yesterday's update described a fire that was already stretching resources and defying strategy, but conditions have worsened significantly since then. Weather deteriorated ahead of schedule on Monday morning, with southwest wind gusts combining with difficult ravine terrain and the early emergence of convective phenomena, the kind of extreme fire behaviour where the blaze generates its own weather system. Large pyrocumulus clouds are forming, and the turbulence and heat they create is so intense that water dropped from aircraft is evaporating before it reaches the ground.

At times, fire crews have had to be evacuated by helicopter after becoming cut off by rapidly merging fire fronts.

The fire has now crossed into Seville province. El Madroño, the smallest municipality in the province, along with its four outlying villages, El Álamo, Juan Antón, Juan Gallego and Villargordo, have all been evacuated. Combined with those already displaced in Huelva province, close to 800 people are now away from their homes. Twenty-four of the most vulnerable are being cared for at the municipal theatre in Zalamea la Real by the Red Cross and Civil Protection.

Five roads in the provincial network remain closed or heavily restricted and will stay that way indefinitely.

Resources are being reinforced. The acting Government Delegate in Andalucía, Francisco Toscano, confirmed this morning that more than 500 Military Emergency Unit and Guardia Civil personnel are now involved in the operation, with Seville-based Guardia Civil patrols joining those already on the ground. Four additional bulldozers are being deployed through Tuesday, along with more forestry brigades.

Toscano was direct about the government's position: "We maintain the full commitment of the Government of Spain to the province of Huelva and to this forest fire to help ensure that it can be extinguished as soon as possible."

The precise extent of the damage will not be known until Copernicus satellite mapping is completed. For now, the priority is protecting people and holding the line.
