Mazarron Council recycling initiative for used cooking oil

Mazarrón Town Hall’s Department of the Environment now has 42 oil recycling containers installed in different parts of the municipality

This project for the separate collection of used cooking oil is financed by the National Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge (MITERD) within the circular economy program and the plan to promote the environment - PIMA Residues 2021 and is carried out in collaboration with the National Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, Environment and Emergencies. 

The Mayor of Mazarrón, Gaspar Miras, accompanied by the Councillor for the Environment, Plácida Gómez, attended the completion of the installations of the 42 containers under a contract with company Gerefran. An Environment Awareness Day was also promoted in March 2023.

REASONS TO RECYCLE USED OIL

1 litre of cooking oil will contaminate 40,000 litres of water, which is the approximate equivalent to the water consumption of one person for a year. Pouring this waste oil down the sink is the main cause of urban water pollution.

An average citizen consumes around 20 litres of edible oil per year, of which between 10% and 20% is discarded.

Treatment of used cooking oil generates high costs in water treatment plants

The bottles in which the oil is poured into the container are also recycled, avoiding the generation of new waste.

Recycling this residue produces biodiesel. A renewable energy that does not run out and is kind to the environment.

As well as recycling containers being installed in Mazarrón town and the Puerto de Mazarrón, additional locations can be found in Camposol, Cañada de Gallego, Cañadas de Romero and Mazarrón Country Club.
