Watch: Ed Sheeran sends his love to fiestas in Archena
British superstar musician stuns revellers with surprise message
It’s no secret that Ed Sheeran has a special connection with the Region of Murcia, since an interview in 2021 when he told Spanish internet celebrity Ibai: “My cousin is married to a girl from Murcia.”
The interview had more than 800,000 viewers and his comments went viral around the country (along with a moment when Ibai confessed that he had confused the globally successful singer/songwriter with Ron Weasley from Harry Potter!), making Murcia a trending topic.
That wedding took place in La Algaida, a district of Archena, which Sheeran attended when he was just nine years old, but nobody was expecting the British superstar to reappear in the area after so many years.
It was during the patron saint fiestas of La Algaida, which include activities such as the “morciallada” (blood sausage tasting), traditional “gachasmigas” (flour pancakes with olive oil and lots of garlic), the popular “azulete” (when everyone uses this natural dye to paints themselves blue), ribbon races on bicycles and a parade with floats.
The singer made his surprise appearance during the inaugural pronouncement on Saturday, which this year was made by Clara Guillén, a local who currently lives in Bristol and is a researcher, teacher at the UK’s Open University, and author of a book and several scientific articles, amongst other achievements.
Everyone watching was gobsmacked when a video came on the big screen, in which Ed Sheeran personally congratulated all the people of La Algaida.
“Good night everyone, happy fiestas of La Algaida and long live the Virgin del Rosario. A big hug!”, he told them in Spanish, before adding in English:
“I hope I pronounced that well. Have a fantastic day. Lots of love.”
A resident shared the video on TikTok and it went viral in no time at all. Some users doubted that the video was real at all and claimed it must have been the work of AI, while another commented: “Just when you thought the world couldn’t get any stranger!”
Nevertheless, it is clear that Ed Sheeran has a special place in his heart for the Region of Murcia and wanted to share it with this district of Archena, even though he was far away.
