The safest city in Spain for tourists? You might be surprised
British newspaper The Mirror has highlighted a Spanish city as the safest destination for tourists - yet it’s a place few Britons ever visit
According to Spain’s Ministry of Industry and Tourism, British travellers are by far the most frequent visitors to the country, with 18.4 million UK tourists arriving in 2024, a 6.6% increase from the previous year. Their spending also grew significantly, reaching 22.6 billion euros, an increase of 13.5%.Despite this, most British tourists tend to flock to well-known destinations like the Costa del Sol, Barcelona or the Balearic Islands.
However, the Mirror has now put the spotlight on Albacete, a city in Castilla-La Mancha that is rarely included on tourist itineraries. One of the key reasons? Safety. With a population of just 170,000, Albacete is described as an “underappreciated city” where “tranquillity generates security” and “the chances of being robbed or being the victim of any other crime are extremely low.”
Beyond safety, the newspaper praises Albacete as “an ideal place to discover the most authentic Spain.” Visitors are encouraged to enjoy a relaxed lifestyle, whether it’s sipping a coffee in a quiet square or sampling “some unparalleled tapas.”
For those interested in history and culture, the city offers the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista, as well as the Albacete Museum, which features exhibitions on ethnography, numismatics, fine arts, and vintage photography.
