Sonrisas Harmony record One Woman for International Women's Day
The Murcia Ladies’ A Capella Chorus are joining women and men around the world in singing for gender equality and female empowerment
by Lynda Christopher, Secretary & Co-ordinator Sonrisas Harmony
Launched on International Women’s Day on March 8, 2013, the song “We are One Woman” continues to inspire listeners to join the drive for women’s rights and gender equality.
“One Woman” was written for UN Women by Beth Blatt and the music composed by Graham Lyle, who famously wrote ‘What’s Love Got to Do with It?’ for the one and only Tina Turner, also co-written by British/Somali singer-songwriter Fahan Hassan.
The song is to celebrate the UN’s mission and work to improve women’s lives around the world. Musicians – women and men – have come together to spread a message of unity and solidarity with this song, “One Woman”, for it reminds us that together, we can overcome violence and discrimination against women and look toward a more positive future.
The message of hope threads through the lyrics. Sonrisas Harmony are proud to be taking part this year and have professionally recorded the song for you to share with your friends. Help us to spread the words of the song writers and support women and girls throughout the world by sharing the video, which can be found on www.sonrisasharmony.es.
Sonrisas Harmony hope you enjoy watching and listening to the Sonrisas Harmony One Woman recording as much as they enjoyed doing it. Our ethos is that we are more than the music and we know that where we lead others will follow with understanding, support and unity.

Introducing Sonrisas Harmony, the new A cappella Chorus on the coast of the Murcian Region; this all-ladies group are based in the Los Alcázares area.
Sonrisas Harmony formed in September 2022 with fifteen ladies who loved to sing and have the support of each other with the social side of the friendships they have formed. Since that time, the Chorus has grown to over 30 members, with nationalities from all over the world. The Musical Director Valerie Lynch is from the USA and comes to Sonrisas with a wealth of knowledge and experience.
Valerie graduated from the Crane School of Music in New York with a Bachelors Degree in Vocal Performance and Music Education, going on to receive a Masters Degree from The University of Texas. She has been a vocal coach and adjudicator in a variety of music genres. Having toured for over 20 years singing as a guest artist with various symphony and chamber orchestras across the USA, Valerie also worked with renowned instrumentalist for many years. Now settled here in Spain, she smiles when she comments that she is the proud MD of Sonrisas Harmony.
The music that Sonrisas Harmony perform is contemporary, four-part harmony A cappella. That might sound a bit of a mouthful to those who have not sung in a chorus before, so to explain, it is singing without the accompaniment of instruments, in four parts: lead, baritone, bass and tenor. The music is modern as well as some classic songs.
In April 2023, Sonrisas Harmony were asked to be in the opening show of one of the biggest A cappella contests in Europe. The spokesperson for the Chorus commented that “it was a great honour to be asked to perform at the Spanish Barbershop Convention 2023, it was the first time a non-barbershop chorus had taken part as far as we know”.
Last Christmas, Sonrisas Harmony sang at various venues around Los Alcázares and San Javier areas, so if you get the chance to attend one of their performances arrive early as it has mostly been standing room only with packed-out audiences!
The ladies rehearse every Wednesday from 10.30am to 1.30pm at Las Claras Centre in Los Alcázares.
There is no previous singing knowledge required and you are never asked to sing alone. All that is required is that you like to sing and have fun, as there is also a social side to Sonrisas Harmony where the ladies have social afternoons or away days.
