The Region of Murcia is preparing for a summer that is expected to break records in terms of tourism. The Regional Minister of Tourism, Carmen Conesa, announced in San Javier this week that forecasts indicate that this year will see 1.9 million visitors in regulated accommodation, 6.5% more than last year.
From January to May, Murcia had a record number of travellers in hotels – 550,000 tourists, 8% more than the same period in 2023 and one percentage point above the national average.
Conesa pointed out that forecasts for July point to an occupancy rate of 80%, while August could reach 90%, although with last-minute bookings, it is possible that occupancy could be close to 100%.
Corvera Airport also plays a crucial role in this increase in tourism, she said, with eight airlines operating flights connecting Murcia to 23 cities in seven different countries.
In the first four months of the year, foreign tourism expenditure in the region reached 367.5 million euros, up 29.6% compared to 2023. In addition, the number of international tourist arrivals grew by 12.2% on last year, reaching 279,017 visitors.
In addition, expenditure on rural tourism in Murcia has grown by almost 5% in the last year, from 81 euros per person per day up to 85 euros.
The tourism sector in Murcia employs 62,000 people and generates revenues of approximately 1.663 billion euros.
