Mosquito and bug spraying at Condado's ornamental lake

ARCHIVED ARTICLE -

Measures are being taken to reduce and control insect breeding at the lake

Mosquito and bug spraying at Condado's ornamental lake
Efforts are underway to control mosquitoes and other insects around Condado de Alhama’s ornamental lake. The company Biocyma is leading the initiative, applying a total of 30 treatments to target mosquito larvae.

These treatments involve spraying the lake’s edges and small water accumulations within the La Isla complex, where larvae develop before maturing into adult mosquitoes. The main species being addressed are Culex and Aedes mosquitoes.

The lake at Condado de Alhama has been a source of concern for a long time now, ever since a lack of water led to foul odours and infestations of insects.

Biocyma’s treatments are usually applied weekly, though frequency may increase based on weather conditions and mosquito activity. It’s worth pointing out that these treatments focus solely on larvae and do not eliminate adult mosquitoes. The next scheduled treatment by Biocyma will take place on Monday April 7.

It’s also the case that the crops in the surrounding area serve as a refuge for mosquitoes, and these areas fall outside the community’s control. Biocyma is exploring passive measures to reduce insect migration and improve treatment coverage across the lake.

Additionally, STV will conduct treatments, including both larvicide and adulticide applications. Their next round is scheduled for this Friday April 4.

To ensure safety and effectiveness, these treatments will be adjusted if weather conditions, such as strong winds, make application unsuitable.

Residents are advised to follow these guidelines during and after treatments:

  • Avoid treated areas during application
  • People with allergies or asthma should take extra precautions
  • Keep animals, food, and kitchen utensils away from treated zones
  • Surfaces that may have come into contact with pesticides should not be touched until the safe re-entry period has passed
  • Any suspected contact with the pesticide should be followed by immediate washing
