May 26 Free guided hike in the mountains behind La Azohía
A rough cliff and hill walk to the Pico de la Panadera organized by the council of Mazarrón
Although this free guided hike takes place in La Azohía, which is in the municipality of Cartagena, it is organized by the tourist office of Mazarrón and online booking is available here through the regional tourist board website.
The route begins close to the 15th-century watchtower of Santa Elena and follows a section of the GR-92 walking route – this runs along cliff paths and is therefore not apt for anyone who suffers from vertigo! Walkers then progress to the hill known as the Collado de los Siete Cucones, between the Pico de La Panadera and the transmissions aerial of Cabo Tiñoso before running back down into La Azohía.
The views along the walk are stupendous but the terrain is rough and rocky, and a certain degree of physical fitness will be required – the use of walking poles is recommended.
In all the walk covers a distance of 5.7 kilometres and is expected to last 3 hours, starting at 9.00. The exact starting point will be communicated to walkers after registration.
Obviously, appropriate footwear and adequate drinking water are necessities, and participants should consult the weather forecast before setting out.
