Lorca invests over €300,000 in improvements across rural districts
The City Council is making a concerted effort to promote and improve its outlying districts
Lorca’s Ayuntamiento has announced a significant investment of €310,613 in infrastructure improvements across several rural districts of the municipality. The initiative, spearheaded by the Councillor for Pedanías, Ángel Meca, aims to enhance connectivity, promote territorial balance and improve the quality of life for residents in outlying areas.
Meca highlighted that these projects are part of the council's ongoing commitment to upgrading rural infrastructure. “We have been announcing numerous actions across multiple districts, and we are delivering on our promises. This is another example of our dedication to improving rural areas, and there will be many more as outlined in our ‘Framework Commitment 2032’. Our goal is a Lorca with better infrastructure, enhanced services and well-maintained roads that facilitate mobility across our vast territory,” he stated.
Meanwhile, a hillside in the Lorca village of Doña Inés has been declared an area of environmental protection and the villages of Río, Almendricos, Campillo, Campo López, El Consejero, Aguaderas and Cazalla are all getting new murals that aim to highlight the history of the rural populations there and promote them as tourist destinations.
Breakdown of investment and new projects
The latest improvement works target five districts – Aguaderas, La Pulgara, Ramonete, Marchena and Tercia. Each project is tailored to address specific needs in these areas:
- Aguaderas: The council has commenced work on the paving of a section of the Camino de Los Conventos, with more than 1.5 kilometres of road set to be resurfaced. This route is crucial for local residents, farmers and transporters moving produce. The investment for this project stands at €99,900.
- Tercia: The district will see the resurfacing of just over a kilometre of the Camino de Los Liforos, a project set to begin next week with a budget of €97,403.
- Ramonete: The General Directorate of Roads has approved the installation of street lighting on an urban section of the RM-D21 road, with an allocation of €44,000.
- La Pulgara: The council has completed the project planning and will soon commence the installation of street lighting on the Camino del Noble and an extension of Puente Alto. This work, budgeted at €35,850, is expected to be completed within two months.
- Marchena: The recent completion of a €33,510 investment has led to the renovation of the rainwater network on a section of the RM-D7 road. This has resolved a persistent flooding issue that had affected local residents for years.
Additionally, the council is undertaking ongoing maintenance, including clearing vegetation and brushwood from roads, ditches and watercourses. Upcoming work in the districts of Torrealvilla, Zuñiga and Purias will further improve local infrastructure.
These projects are all part of a broader initiative within the ‘Plan de Pedanías’ of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia. This programme, signed between the City Council and the regional government in July last year, has allocated over €1.1 million to improve infrastructure across Lorca’s rural areas.
Meca reaffirmed the council’s long-term commitment to developing strategies that secure further investment in municipal roads, infrastructure and essential services. “We will remain steadfast in our efforts to improve the quality of life for all residents of Lorca, regardless of where they live,” he concluded.
