Flights for 50 euros between Corvera Airport and Barcelona and Madrid launched by Volotea airlines
The airline will link the Region of Murcia with the capital cities twice a week beginning in December
One of the busiest airlines operating at Murcia’s Corvera airport, Volotea, has put 20,000 flights on sale at bargain-basement prices on Thursday May 25. The carrier is offering tickets between the Region and Madrid and Barcelona for just 50 euros, a price that could drop as low as 19 euros if paired with other promotions.
Although the flights are on sale now, the twice-weekly routes won’t begin operating until December. Volotea won a contract tendered by the regional government to promote Murcia as a tourist destination and give a boost to Corvera, a package that will cost 2.4 million euros and initially last for a year and a half.
However, the carrier not only hopes to extend the contract but to use the project as a springboard to launch into more markets and increase the frequency of flights to and from Murcia.
“Launching the Madrid and Barcelona routes from the airport in the Region of Murcia puts us on another level; It is a very important change for us,” Volotea’s Carlos Muñoz said, admitting that the airline has been vying for the routes for some time.
“Our intention is that it be for the long term, and not only the time that the contract establishes. We trust that there will be a good development of these routes because our intention is to increase the frequencies. The first thing is that these first two go well, so that we can introduce a third.”
New flights details
Flights between the Region and the Spanish capital will begin on December 1 and run on Tuesdays and Fridays initially but from January 9, this will switch to Mondays and Fridays. The flight duration is approximately 1 hour and 10 minutes.
The schedule from January 9:
- Monday: departure from Madrid at 9.50am and arrival in the Region at 11am. Departure from the Region at 11.40am and arrival in Madrid at 12.55pm.
- Friday: Departure from Madrid at 3.45pm and departure from the Region at 5.50pm.
The route with Barcelona will begin on December 3. Until January 9, Volotea will fly on Wednesdays and Sundays, and after that date the flights will operate on Mondays and Fridays.
The hours will be the following:
- Monday: Departure from Barcelona at 8.45am. Departure from Murcia at 10.40am.
- Friday: Departure from Barcelona at 4pm. Departure from Murcia at 5.55pm.
"Having this new airport in the Region of Murcia, we are going to do our bit to maximise it," Mr Muñoz said.
After Ryanair, Volotea offers the most seats from Corvera. The airline started out in the Region in 2019 with just 10,000 seats, which will increase to 45,000 by the end of the year.
