Five Almería towns named among Spain's top retirement destinations for foreigners
The Sun newspaper says Almería offers cheap beer, affordable property and plenty of sunshine
Almería is gaining a reputation as one of Spain's most attractive retirement destinations for foreigners, with British newspaper The Sun highlighting five locations in the province as ideal places to enjoy life after work.
The publication included Almería in a list of the five most affordable areas in Spain for retirees, alongside Murcia, Palencia, Ciudad Real and Lugo. It also singled out five specific locations within the province that it believes offer an appealing combination of sunshine, affordable property, a lower cost of living and, of course, cheap beer.
According to the report, Almería is increasingly being viewed as an alternative to more established expat hotspots such as the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca, offering many of the same advantages but often at a lower price.
Albox
Among the locations mentioned, Albox stands out thanks to its long-established British community.
The town has been a popular choice for UK residents for many years, with a network of businesses, services and social groups that can make settling into life in Spain easier for newcomers.
The Sun highlighted the availability of relatively affordable homes in the area, with properties in Albox and neighbouring inland towns often available for significantly less than in many coastal locations.
Turre
Just a short drive from Mojácar, Garrucha and the beaches of the Levante Almeriense, Turre offers a balance between inland living and easy access to the coast.
The newspaper noted that buyers can often find more affordable housing here than in nearby seaside resorts, while still being close enough to enjoy beaches, restaurants and other coastal attractions whenever they choose.
Like Albox, Turre also benefits from a well-established international community.
Cantoria
Another Almanzora Valley town to make the list is Cantoria.
The report points to the area's lower property prices as one of its main attractions, with townhouses, apartments and rural homes often available at prices that would be difficult to find in many other parts of southern Spain.
Cantoria has long been popular with foreign buyers looking for a quieter pace of life while remaining within easy reach of larger towns and services.
Almería city
For those who prefer urban living, The Sun included the provincial capital in its selection.
While property prices are generally higher than in the inland towns, the newspaper said Almería city still represents good value compared with many other Mediterranean locations.
Residents can enjoy beaches, shops, restaurants, healthcare facilities, cultural attractions and transport connections, all within a city that retains a more relaxed atmosphere than some of Spain's larger coastal destinations.
Cabo de Gata-Níjar
Rounding off the list is the area around the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park.
Rather than focusing on a single town, the report highlights the natural park as one of the province's biggest attractions. Its dramatic coastline, protected landscapes and traditional villages continue to draw visitors and residents looking for a quieter lifestyle close to nature.
Places such as San José, Las Negras, Agua Amarga and Rodalquilar have become increasingly popular with people seeking a less developed stretch of the Spanish Mediterranean.
Why Almería is attracting retirees
According to The Sun, one of Almería's biggest selling points is affordability.
The newspaper reports that day-to-day living costs in Spain remain considerably lower than in the UK, with cheaper food, drinks and dining out helping retirees make their money go further.
The province's climate also plays a major role. With more than 300 days of sunshine each year and generally mild winters, Almería offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor living throughout the year.
Combined with its beaches, natural parks and relatively affordable property market, it's easy to see why more retirees are looking beyond Spain's traditional expat destinations and giving Almería a closer look.
