February 9-18 Alhama de Murcia Carnival schedule 2024
There will be the usual mix of parades, contests and humour at the Alhama de Murcia Carnival this year
Children’s Carnival
- Friday February 9: Children’s carnival parade, leaving at 4pm from the Avenida de la Constitución and going along the main streets of the municipality until it reaches the Auditorium, where there will be a children’s musical show called “Cantachuches”. More than a dozen schools and educational centres from Alhama and the surrounding districts will participate in the parade, showing their original and fun costumes.
- Sunday February 11: The Plaza de la Constitución will host the “Diver Carnival”, starting at 11.30am for a full day of entertainment for the little ones, who will be able to enjoy workshops, games, inflatables, makeup and other surprises.
Adult Carnival
- Saturday February 17: The Alhama de Murcia Carnival parade-contest will be held, which will bring together clubs, groups from Alhama and visitors who want to participate with their costumes. The parade will begin at 4.30pm from the Avenida de la Constitución and there will be music from the D'Akokan batucada drumming group to open the parade. Participants will be eligible for cash prizes and trophies in the group and individual categories, as well as subsidies for groups. Registrations to participate can be made until February 14 at the Casa de la Cultura, where you can consult the rules and regulations of the parade. The awards ceremony will take place at the end of the parade, at the door of the Town Hall.
Also on this Saturday, there will performances of the Alhama ‘chirigota’ satirical songs, which are new this year. The chirigotas are more typical of the famous carnival in Cádiz, but this year is the first ever year that Alhama de Murcia will have its very own chirigotas. Worth a watch if you can as they are a real spectacle! They can be seen in Parque de la Cubana park at 3.30pm and outside the door of the Ayuntamiento building at 4pm, as well as around the streets of the town.
Senior Carnival
- Sunday February 18: The Alhama Senior Centre will host the “Senior Carnival” dance, which will begin at 7pm and will feature a performance by musician José de los Amos. Specifically designed for older people to be able to join in the fun, attendees will be able to show off their costumes and be eligible for prizes for the best individual costume, the best couple costume and the most creative costume.
