Aware of the countless virtues that green spaces afford the local community, Águilas Town Council have continued their quest to produce more green areas around the town.
Contact with such spaces mean physical, psychological and social benefits for the entire population of Águilas.
Such areas also have many positive aspects in regards to the economy, society and the environment. These changes help with the improvement in air quality or the drop in temperature that is so necessary to deal with climate change.
With a commitment to increasing sustainable urban developments, the Town Council has begun remodelling the parks and gardens in Las Yucas, Montcada and El Hornillo.
Town squares have also been modernised, converting them into open and accessible spaces, ideal for promoting intergenerational leisure and social activities, and in all cases increasing the presence of plants.
Moreover, large green spaces have been created in different parts of the town, as is the case with the 24,000-square-metre green area “Explorador Felipe López” and the 30,000-square-metre forest developed within the Proyecto Life Adaptate project.
Likewise, the Maestra Mari Collado and Robles Vives playareas have been converted into inclusive parks for all. While dog parks have been created in Los Collados, La Loma and the Jardín de la Memoria.
Much of the work has been funded by the EU, under the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), in order to help Águilas become a more sustainable municipality.
The mayor of Águilas, Mari Carmen Moreno, stated that project has a “clear commitment to the creation of new green areas and the improvement of existing ones” when addressing the subject.
