Águilas beaches: Playa de la Cañada del Negro, dog friendly beach
150 metres of rocky beach in the western outskirts of Águilas
The stretch of beach in Águilas known as La Cañada del Negro is a 150-metre-long area just outside the western end of the town, alongside where the Calle de Iberia meets the RM-333 road to San Juan de los Terreros.
This is a dog friendly beach, one of only two in the municipality (the other being Cala Mijo) on which it is legal to allow dogs off the lead and in the sea.
Owners are, of course, urged to remove any dog excrement left by their pets, and to ensure that no annoyance is caused to other beach users.
The beach operates as a dog friendly beach between the months of September to June.
It’s very much a rural beach, and parking and access is more or less as you find it: there is space on top of the dunes which stand behind it, next to two houses which are clearly visible from the main road. These two houses warrant the description of “semi-urban” in some literature, but don’t be fooled: La Cañada del Negro is not served by any bars, shops, restaurants or other facilities in the immediate vicinity and is very much a semi-wild beach.
This is one of the wilder parts of the spectacular Águilas coastline, and rather than sand the surface of Playa Cañada del Negro consists of rocks, small stones and pebbles, and fine gravel.
Nonetheless, this means that the water is always clear, and this is one of the many excellent locations in Águilas for scuba divers and snorkelers.
The beach of Cañada del Negro lies between those of Matalentisco to the west and the new beach of La Casica Verde to the east.
