Region of Murcia shines with three Green Flags for sustainability

Mazarrón scores first, while Cartagena and San Javier retain prestigious eco-awards
The Region of Murcia is celebrating a successful year in sustainability, with three municipalities proudly awarded the Green Flags; a respected distinction recognising cities committed to glass recycling and environmental responsibility. Mazarrón is honoured as the region’s first-ever recipient of this award from Ecovidrio’s Green Flags Movement, now in its sixth edition aimed at promoting sustainable waste management along Spain’s coasts.
Joining Mazarrón once again this year are Cartagena and San Javier, both of which have maintained their Green Flag status. Of the six towns in the region participating in the latest summer campaign, Cartagena led with a total score of 1,229 points, followed by San Javier with 689 points and Mazarrón close behind at 640. Meanwhile, San Pedro del Pinatar, Águilas, and Los Alcázares fell just short of receiving the award.
Across Spain, 165 municipalities in six regions, along with over 14,000 hospitality businesses, took part in the initiative. Collectively, they recycled more than 66,800 tonnes of glass containers during the peak summer months of June, July, and August.
Highlighting the Region of Murcia’s commitment to sustainability, more than 700 local hospitality establishments actively participated. Among them, the CP8 restaurant in Cabo de Palos earned special recognition as one of Spain’s top ten sustainable restaurateurs for its outstanding environmental responsibility. The restaurant was also invited to join an exclusive Master Class hosted by two-Michelin-star chef Ricard Camarena, known for his Green Star accolade celebrating sustainable hospitality.
The Green Flag awards ceremony took place recently at the Regional Ministry of the Environment. María Cruz Ferreira, Regional Secretary for Energy, Sustainability and Climate Action, praised the ongoing efforts: “The Region of Murcia continues to take firm steps towards a circular economy, promoting environmental responsibility and efficiency in the use of natural resources.”
Mazarrón’s award reflected the strong engagement of local residents in selective glass collection, full participation of the hospitality sector, and successful public awareness campaigns. For Cartagena and San Javier, the award recognised their ongoing improvements to waste collection systems and commitment to protecting the coastal environment.
These achievements underline the vibrant collaboration between public authorities, businesses, and the community as Murcia leads by example in sustainable living and environmental stewardship.
